Salt Lake County Metro Jail Overview

Salt Lake County Metro Jail is operated by the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Corrections Bureau. County research identifies Metro as the public-facing jail building for booking, intake, bail payments, deposits, mail routing, property forms, signatures, and the main map and directions use case. New arrests, court remands, warrant arrests, local jail sentences, and agency holds can move through the Metro booking process before a housing decision is made by Corrections.

County jail records should not be read as the final court case. A Metro booking can show arrest-side information before the Salt Lake County District Attorney, a city prosecutor, or a court files formal charges. Once a person is sentenced to state prison and transferred to the Utah Department of Corrections, the county roster may stop being the correct lookup. At that point, the UDC Offender Search is the better source for state custody.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Lookup

The fastest official path is the county Find a Prisoner page, which routes users to the Salt Lake County Inmate Lookup Tool. The lookup accepts a name search or an identifier search by booking number, permanent number, or state ID. It is useful when a person is already processed enough to appear in the database, but the county does not publish a refresh schedule for the form.

The separate Jail Dockets & Rosters page gives daily roster and in/out docket PDFs. Those files answer a different question than the name lookup. The roster is a daily population snapshot, while the in/out docket shows movement for a specific day. If a Metro Jail inmate is too new to appear by name, the daily file, the jail phone line, or a GRAMA request can help confirm whether booking data exists.

The county Find a Prisoner page is the official launch point for the roster workflow.

That page is important because Salt Lake County has removed some personal identifiers from public jail roster display, so a blank date field does not always mean the record is wrong.

2. Search by last name, and add first name if the result list is too broad.
3. Use booking number, permanent number, or state ID when one of those identifiers is known.
4. Check Jail Dockets & Rosters if the person was booked recently or if a daily movement file is needed.
5. Call Corrections at 385-468-8400 or use GRAMA when the online sources do not answer the custody question.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Contact

Metro Jail is the main public address for many Salt Lake County jail tasks. The county bail page sends in-person bail and fine payments to Metro. The deposit page says payments for both Metro and Oxbow prisoners are made at Metro only. The mail page also uses the Metro Jail mailing address for Oxbow prisoners, which makes this building the key routing point even when housing assignment is somewhere else in the county jail system.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Visits

Salt Lake County jail visiting rules apply to Metro social visits. The official visiting material states that walk-in visits are welcomed, but prescheduled visits are encouraged and take priority. Visits may be scheduled up to six days in advance by calling 385-468-8400. Each eligible prisoner is allowed two visits per week and one clergy visit per week, unless discipline, medical quarantine, lockdown, transport, or other jail limits apply.

Metro has a higher visitor limit than Oxbow. Up to three visitors may attend a Metro visit, and infants under one year old do not count toward that limit. Visitors age 16 or older need valid government ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, passport, or consulate card. School IDs and driving privilege cards are not accepted under the posted county rules. The Metro lobby also has a Nessel Lactation Pod for nursing mothers.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Mail and Money

The county Communicate with a Prisoner page is the hub for mail, phones, email, visits, and commissary. Prisoners may make outgoing calls, but they cannot receive incoming calls. Housing-area phones are generally available from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Calls are limited to 15 minutes, or 30 minutes when using a TDD machine, and ordinary calls may be monitored or recorded except attorney calls.

Mail must include the prisoner's name and SO# if known. The county mail format is Prisoner's Name and SO# if known, c/o Salt Lake County Metro Jail, 3415 S. 900 W., Salt Lake City, UT 84119. Incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband, except legally privileged mail. The county bars many items, including stamps, stickers, tape, staples, blank cards, instant photographs, glitter, laminated items, and more than twelve photographs. New soft-cover books and periodicals must come directly from a publisher, book club, or book retailer through USPS.

The process usually creates booking and permanent identifiers, records the arresting or holding agency, inventories property, takes photo and fingerprint information, screens medical and mental-health needs, checks warrants and holds, and assigns housing through classification.

The Salt Lake County Corrections FAQ states that booking takes an average of 6 to 8 hours from arrival. Intoxication, non-compliance, medical needs, or inability to be processed can extend that time. That lag matters for Metro Jail inmate lookup because a person may be in intake before the name search or daily roster gives a clean public result. The daily roster PDFs and in/out docket files are snapshots, not a full real-time inmate history database.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Directions

Metro Jail is the primary public destination for Salt Lake County jail visits, in-person bail payments, jail administration tasks, prisoner signatures, and many custody questions. The facility sits in South Salt Lake west of I-15 near the 3300 South and 3500 South approaches. From I-15, visitors generally use the 3300 South or 3500 South exits, then travel west toward 900 West and the jail campus. From the west side of the valley, 3500 South and Redwood Road corridors can connect toward 900 West.

Official research did not identify a detailed public visitor parking map, parking rate, jail-specific transit route list, or separate ADA entrance description. Confirm travel details before leaving, bring government ID for visit-related business, and follow posted entry rules at the secure lobby. Do not bring weapons, drugs, recording devices where barred, unauthorized electronics, or personal property that the jail rules do not allow.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Bail Records

Metro Jail is the local in-person bail and fine payment address identified by the official county bail page. Before paying, confirm the prisoner's SO#, the current court order, and whether any other hold prevents release. Utah pretrial release is controlled by court orders under current Utah law, so cash payment on one case may not release a person if another court, parole, probation, federal, ICE, or agency hold remains.

Accepted in-person payment types listed by the county are cash, cashier's check, and certified check. Cashier's and certified checks must be verified during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and checks should be made out to Salt Lake County Treasurer. The page lists no fee for bail/fine payment and states bail is accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If the lobby is closed, the county tells visitors to press the silver button by the entry doors and wait for the operator.
